Codling Moth Versus Apple Maggot The immature codling moth is a caterpillar with head, six claw-like legs and a shield behind the head and at the back end. Mature size = 3/4 inch. Immature apple maggot is a headless, legless maggot with dark mouth hooks at the front end. Mature size = 3/8 inch long. The codling moth is ½-inch long and first. Pheromone lures mimic bug hormones or scents that are normally given off by insects to attract the opposite sex of their species for mating. When used with traps they lure the insects into the trap, preventing them from mating and capturing them on the sticky substance found inside the trap. This helps to break the reproductive cycle of the pest and it allows you to monitor the size .

“For codling moth, IPM relies on pest monitoring and includes a great variety of insecticide chemistries, as well as biological control and mating disruption.” The fruit entomologists at Michigan State University – Larry Gut, John Wise, David Epstein and Peter McGhee – have put together tables and charts that tell growers what to do when. To control any pest, it’s important to know their lifecycle – Codling Moth are gestating over winter either in the soil below the tree, or the nooks and crannies of.

Cydia pomonella. Codling moths are pests that afflict apple and pear growers in North America. Populations of codling moths can get out of hand quickly as the damage they cause is not readily visible in many instances. Orchard growers may complain of "wormy" apples; this is a direct result of the tunneling damage done by codling moth larvae whereby feeding galleries.

At the MSU Trevor Nichols Research Center (Fennville, MI) we set codling moth biofix on thus we can expect continued emergence of codling moth adults and widespread oviposition (egg laying), with first egg hatch (codling moth bio + DD b50) predicted for the second week of June.

To get the most benefit from a codling moth control measure, growers should treat a block after moth. What are Codling Moths. Codling moth larvae belong to a 20mm grayish brown moth which has alternating grey- brown bands across the wing tip.

Eggs are laid on leaves usually near fruit. Larvae tunnel into the fruit and feed for weeks before tunneling out an exit hole. After pupation, adults emerge days later and the cycle is repeated. In this case, the residue of virus during the summer gives good control of codling moth larvae when used with a delayed first cover program.

The time of year also plays a role in pest pressure. After August 20th, all newly-hatched larvae are destined for diapause because of changes in day length. While those larvae still pose a risk for damage. Adult codling moth How to identify codling moths.

Adults are medium-sized (about 3/8 inch long) and light grayish brown. The males have a distinctive band of shiny coppery scales at the end of the wings. The codling moth larva is large (up to ½ inch long), and has a pinkish body with a brownish head.

Found in all apple-growing areas of the world, the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) is considered to be one of the most destructive pests of are gray to brown moths with a 3/4 inch wingspan.

They have a chocolate-colored patch at the tip of each forewing and coppery transverse markings. The traditional control program is to spray trees with insecticide. But if you prefer to use greener methods, the following can reduce codling moth damage.

IDENTIFICATION. Codling moth adults are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long with mottled gray wings that they hold tentlike over their bodies (Figure 1). Their appearance blends well with most tree bark, making them difficult to detect.

Codling moth resistance to some of the older insecticides that had been used for control. Fortunately, there are new labeled insecticide alternatives for codling moth control on apples with different modes of action.

Growers should not rely on a single insecticide mode of action throughout the year to control codling moth. And even non-chemical control techniques, such as pheromone disruption, require good planning. A codling moth larva. Photo: Todd Gilligan, LepIntercept, USDA APHIS ITP, Timely sprays.
